Introduction to Using “Bowtie” Methodology (Barrier-Based Risk Analysis)

Date/Time
Date(s) - June 25 2024
9:00am - 4:30pm

Location
Lonsdale House

We are pleased to provide this course about the topical and helpful “Bowtie” method of presenting and analysing risks in any rail-related industrial setting.

Join this workshop to understand the basics of bowtie model building, through an in-person interactive workshop with teaching, gamification and an opportunity to take back a practical method into your own business.

Bowtie analysis reframes your existing safety information in terms of what you are actually doing to manage risk. The analysis builds on a (relatively) simple model that easily answers 3 questions, namely:

  • Do you know what you are doing that carries risk?
  • What are you doing to manage that?
  • Do you know how well that’s working?

An essential part of the delivery is having a visual representation. By doing the risk assessment in a visual framework you have:

  • An easier route to identifying shortfall or exposure to risk.
  • A simple way to communicate issues more simply.
  • A means to facilitate conversations.
  • A method to focus your attention for that week/ quarter/ year.

Bowtie/ barrier-based risk analysis is a proven technique from high-hazards industries and already in use in the rail industry.

This course is delivered by Rail Forum Member, Dr. Amanda Elliott and Alistair Cowin. Amanda has 25 years of rail experience on rolling stock, depots and railway signalling delivery.

Alistair comes from an aeronautical background and has 25 years of safety experience and 10 years involvement with bowties, working with multiple rail clients and was influential in the foundation and running of the Rail User Group for BowtieXP.

Attendees can expect a valuable session provided by experienced bowtie practitioners who have a mixed industrial background, including rail and human factors. The course uses a variety of approaches to engage and educate and will be focused on Rail Forum Member’s needs.

The workshop is aimed at managers who have a responsibility for, or need to understand risks in the business. Risks in your business range from operational and manufacturing daily activities, to business risks and wider economic, safety record, licencing or ecological impacts. There is value in attending for Operational Directors and Managers, Managing Directors and Team Leaders. Bookings for multiple attendees is allowed and encouraged.
