GB Railfreight (GBRf) is regearing 12 of its Class 66s to increase their power output for a rapidly growing portfolio of heavy trainload work. The regearing will change their gear wheel from traction motor to axle, providing higher torque value and better acceleration to handle heavier loads more efficiently. As part of the conversion, the selected Class 66s will have their top speed reduced from 75mph to 65mph.
GBRf has completed four locos (66793-796 in the GBHH pool) imported from Europe in 2020/21. The last built 66 for the UK, 66779 Evening Star, has just been released and has been renumbered 66689. Next in line are 66757/772/777, which will become 66667/682/687, while 66793-796 are due to be renumbered.
Other GBRf Class 66s to be considered for conversion in batch 66752-77, which would be become 66662 – 66688.
“Liam Day, Asset Director at GB Railfreight, said; “Our fleet must meet the needs of our customers. This regearing programme will ensure that we have the right kit to deliver efficient logistics solutions in support of construction projects across the country.”
