School Careers FairsHarsco have engaged with Northampton School to promote Professional Engineering career paths to all of their Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils as well as a parents session to explore career paths with Professional Engineering. We also looked at hydraulic pumps and bearings and talked about how Professional Engineers can use data, science and maths to optimise their life and overall cost efficiency.

Real Life Maths Lesson – Saving the World with Triangles!Harsco attended Gilsborough school to deliver year 9 maths lessons and highlight how their skills can be used in the real world by modelling a flat spot on a train wheel. Using the maths of right-angled triangles we determined how large the defect could be before it prevents the wheel from rotating and risking a derailment, with all of the terrible consequences that entails. We then saved the word by sharing our knowledge through standards such as RIS-2766-RST and thereby helped everyone avoid derailments caused by wheel flats. The next time you read a standard, can you work out why the limit is set at a particular level.
