Fans of the iconic English Electric Type 5 will have not one but two opportunities to see Class 55 55009 Alycidon in action this summer, as the Deltic Preservation Society’s flagship locomotive embarks on an exciting run of appearances.
First up is the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway’s Diesel Gala, running from 18–21 June, where Alycidon is set to be one of the star attractions. The event promises to be a highlight of the preserved diesel calendar, and the DPS locomotive — one of three Class 55s in the society’s care — will no doubt draw considerable interest from enthusiasts making the trip to West Yorkshire.
Looking ahead to July, Alycidon is then scheduled to head to the Nene Valley Railway for what promises to be a particularly special occasion. The Deltic will share the tracks with A1 Pacific 4-6-2 No. 60163 Tornado — a pairing that brings together two of the preserved scene’s most celebrated locomotives. Adding to the appeal, the NVR visit will also include Driver Experience trips, giving visitors a rare chance to get hands-on with this legendary machine.
