The New Engineering Contract (NEC), or NEC Engineering and Construction Contract, is a formalised system created by the Institution of Civil Engineers that guides the drafting of documents on civil engineering, construction and maintenance projects for the purpose of obtaining tenders, awarding and administering contracts. The NEC is a family of standard contracts, each of which aims to stimulate good management of the relationship between the two parties to the contract and, hence, of the work included in the contract. They can be used in a wide variety of commercial situations, for a wide variety of types of work and in any location, and are clear and simple documents using language and a structure which are straightforward and easily understood.

NEC4, the 4th edition of the documents, was announced in March 2017 and has been available since June 2017. This new edition reflects procurement and project management developments and emerging best practice, with improvements in flexibility, clarity and the ease of administration.

Network Rail have indicated they will be rolling out NEC4 contracts during CP7  so it is important that all suppliers to Network Rail have a good understanding of how these new contract terms will work and what the benefits might be.

We are delighted that Shoosmiths will be delivering a webinar on NEC4 to help Rail Forum members get to grips with the changes. This will cover key aspects of the NEC4 contract family and what they mean in practice for organisations operating under an NEC4 based framework or contract.
