Membership status:  Gold

A leader in transport solutions for more than 170 years, Siemens Mobility builds and maintains trains and provides rail infrastructure and software solutions in Britain. We transform rail travel and transport with our skilled workforce of 5,700 UK employees. We are currently delivering significant inward investment in Yorkshire and Wiltshire, growing our local footprint.

Siemens Mobility delivers a full range of transport-related activities in the UK including research, manufacturing, installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance. The company works with 2,500 suppliers, 52% of them are UK based SMEs. Around 92% of all our suppliers are based in the UK.

Siemens Mobility operates from 30 key UK locations from Southampton to Glasgow. They include offices, manufacturing facilities, 10 rolling stock maintenance depots and 4 other customer service sites. More than a fifth of the UK’s passenger rail vehicles are maintained by the company and run over 72 million miles each year.

Our existing manufacturing facilities in Chippenham and in Ashby de la Zouch supply railway signalling, control, customer information and telecoms systems to global markets. 33% of our manufacturing facilities’ production is exported. We are investing £100m in a brand-new manufacturing, digital engineering and R&D centre at Chippenham, where we will build the next generation of conventional and digital rail signalling and control systems for Britain.

The company has also built a new Train Manufacturing Facility, in Goole, East Yorkshire. Production began here in March 2024, and will provide employment for up to 700 people. The facility is at the core of the Goole Rail Village with the RaisE Business Centre and Components Facility already operating there. 80% of the 94 new Piccadilly Line trains will be built at the site.

Siemens Mobility was heavily involved in Thameslink providing 1,140 carriages, two new rail depots, associated maintenance and financing, as well as new signalling capabilities. This included the integration of Automatic Train Operation with Siemens’ European Train Control System to enable a metro frequency on the line through central London. Siemens Mobility also provided 17 very high-speed trains to Eurostar based on its Velaro platform.

Our signalling, train control, traffic management, electrification, communication, information and mobile communications systems, delivered by our teams across the UK, are in use in every corner of the GB railway. We are train control and traffic management partners in the East Coast Digital Programme, bringing state-of-the-art digital signalling to improve passenger journeys and drive down costs.

Other major projects include the work to radically improve journeys through Birmingham New Street station. Our solutions underpin the success of the Elizabeth and Victoria lines in London. We deliver high technology, high efficiency electrification solutions, passenger information systems that make passing through stations comfortable and safe, and mobile communication systems fitted to every main line train in GB.
