Regional transport not-for-profit Sustainable Transport Midlands launches new ‘Idea’ volunteer scheme

Transport campaigning and innovation group Sustainable Transport Midlands (STM) have announced its new “Idea” volunteer scheme and campaign today, which will allow more people from across the region to apply for a role, even if they aren’t currently in the transport industry.

The new Idea volunteer scheme splits application to an STM role into five simple steps, making it more appealing to potential applicants who just want to get to work. These steps are laid out on the new Idea section of the transport-mids.com website, and include a simple Expression of Interest form and a virtual meeting with a Cabinet Executive.

Harry Burr, Chief Executive at Sustainable Transport Midlands said; “It’s great to be launching Idea today. Although it’s been in the public eye for a while on our website, today we made the final additions to the scheme and it’s finally ready for official launch.”

Harry made it clear which specific types of volunteers STM are looking for at the start of this new scheme. “We’ve made it clear in the past as an organisation that we are lacking Cabinet Executives – those people that sit at the top of the organisation and make vital decisions that affect Sustainable Transport Midlands as a whole. In fact, I’m the only one! If you’re considering joining us as a volunteer, I’d highly recommend you pick a Cabinet Executive role.”

The example roles listed on the Idea section of the Sustainable Transport Midlands website aren’t just for those in the transport industry either. From Digital and Design to Finance and Communications, there’s a variety of roles available, even if you don’t have a lot of experience in the sector.

Kira Newman, who is General Advisor to the Chief Executive for Volunteering, said the new Idea scheme isn’t just beneficial to the region, but also flexible for the volunteers themselves too. “We take pride in the flexibility of the Idea scheme. You are your own diary – if you can’t work for a week, just let us know, and we’re completely understandable towards that.”

“It’s not just timings either – it’s also roles. If you aren’t happy with where you are in our structure, tell us and we’ll work with you to change your role, whether that’s inside Sustainable Transport Midlands or within a project or campaign.”
