DB Cargo UK has installed new track-side lighting technology to support safer and more effective train preparation, with funding from Network Rail’s Freight Safety Improvement Programme.
The system improves visibility during roll-by examinations, helping ground staff identify defects such as loose fittings, dragging brakes and other safety-critical issues while trains are in motion.
Initially trialled at Margam Knuckle Yard in South Wales, the technology has now been rolled out to sites across the UK.
The initiative forms part of the National Freight Safety Group’s Wagon Condition Programme, which aims to strengthen maintenance and safety practices across the sector.
It is now in place at 17 locations:
• Margam Knuckle Yard East and West End, Wales
• Newport AD, Wales
• Cardiff Tidal , Wales
• Doncaster Belmont
• Kingsbury
• Rotherham
• Scunthorpe Trent and Anchor Sidings
• Acton
• Tees
• Westbury
• Hoo Junction
• Toton
• Didcot
• Carlisle Kingmoor Yard
• Miller Hill, Scotland
