Legge Infrastructure Services (LIS) has been officially awarded the contract for Rail Operations and Terminal Management with Sizewell C, marking a significant milestone in the company’s continued growth.

As an SME specialising in rail consultancy services for major UK infrastructure projects, the appointment represents an opportunity for LIS to further demonstrate the value that independent rail freight operations can bring. The company will support the project through the development of rail freight logistics strategies and the management of live rail terminals within a major construction environment.

LIS has been supporting the Sizewell C project since 2022, working closely with the client to help shape and deliver the rail freight strategy and rail terminal solution. This work has involved navigating the Development Consent Order (DCO) process and associated constraints to develop an efficient Materials by Rail service capable of meeting project demands within a complex operating environment.

Following a successful tender process earlier this year, LIS has now been formally appointed as the project’s Rail Operations and Terminal Management partner. Under the new three-year contract, the company will provide specialist personnel embedded within the Sizewell C site operations and delivery team.

The LIS team will manage the Rail Control Tower and terminal infrastructure across two rail terminals at Sizewell C, helping to ensure the safe, compliant and efficient operation of facilities used by suppliers’ Materials by Rail services. Responsibilities will include terminal slot allocation, scheduling, safety compliance and stakeholder coordination with Network Rail, freight operators and Civil Works Alliance supply chain partners.

The company says it is proud to play a role in maximising the use of rail freight across the project, supporting the successful delivery of one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure programmes.

As part of its commitment to the local community, more than 40% of the embedded rail team will be recruited from the local area. LIS will also provide training and development opportunities to help employees build the skills and knowledge required for long-term careers in the rail logistics and construction sectors.

The company is looking forward to working alongside Sizewell C over the next three years, building on the experience it has gained delivering Materials by Rail solutions for other nationally significant infrastructure projects.
