Diamond Rail Services Help Transform TPE Nova 1 Fleet

A major programme to refresh the interiors of TransPennine Express’ Nova 1 fleet is now underway, with Diamond Rail Services playing a key role in delivering new seat covers and cushions for all 19 trains.

The Sheffield-based rail specialist is supplying the new seating as part of a wider refurbishment programme being delivered in partnership with TransPennine Express and Hitachi Rail.

The project will see the existing seating across the entire Nova 1 fleet replaced with a distinctive new design inspired by the shard shapes found in TPE’s branding and the exterior livery of the trains.

For Diamond Rail Services, the project represents another opportunity to apply its rail manufacturing expertise to a programme that will have a direct impact on passengers travelling across the North.

From design to finished seating

The new seating has been developed with both appearance and performance in mind. Alongside creating a fresh look for the Nova 1 fleet, the design considers passenger comfort, durability and accessibility.

High-contrast colours have been incorporated to help visually impaired passengers, with the design developed using colour contrast guidance as part of the wider focus on accessibility.

Diamond Rail Services is responsible for supplying the finished seat covers and cushions, working alongside the wider project team to bring the new design into production.

The programme has also brought together a number of businesses from across the North. Yorkshire-based textile manufacturer Camira has supported the colour selection and sampling process, while Derby-based industrial designers David Gordon and Andy Sykes developed the seating design.

Keeping rail investment in the North

Based in Sheffield, Diamond Rail Services is proud to be supporting a train operator whose network connects communities across the region.

The programme has also created new jobs within the Diamond Group, helping to grow the team and strengthen capability to deliver work for the rail sector. For Diamond Rail, that’s one of the most rewarding aspects of projects like this. It’s not just about producing a component and sending it out the door, it’s about building capability, creating opportunities and keeping more of the value of rail investment within the regional supply chain.

Jenny Dempsey, Managing Director of Diamond Rail Services, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to be supporting TransPennine Express with the Nova 1 refurbishment programme. It’s particularly rewarding to be delivering this work from our Sheffield facility for a train operator that serves our local communities. The project has allowed us to grow our team while continuing to develop our rail manufacturing capability, and it’s been fantastic to work alongside TPE, Hitachi Rail, Camira and the wider project team. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when businesses across the North bring their expertise together.”

The first Nova 1 trains are already entering the refurbishment programme, with all 19 sets scheduled to receive the new seating between July and the end of the year.

For Diamond Rail Services, it is another step forward in our ambition to support the rail industry with the people, skills and manufacturing capability needed to keep the UK’s railway moving.
