Ganymede’s Mark Lamb has added a World Championship title to an already impressive international hockey career after helping the England Over 50s team win the World Masters Hockey World Cup in Rotterdam.

The tournament, held in the Netherlands from 22 July to 1 August, brought together Masters hockey teams from across the world, with England ultimately taking the title and being crowned World Champions.

For Mark, the achievement was particularly special as it was his first World Cup appearance and the latest milestone in four years representing England.

Four years representing England

Mark’s international hockey journey has already included considerable success.

During his four years representing England, his teams have secured three gold medals and one silver at the Home Nations Championships as well as gold and silver medals at the European Championships.

Ahead of the World Cup, the England squad had been preparing together since January and arrived in Rotterdam in strong form after winning gold at the Four Nations, overcoming Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

But the World Cup represented a new challenge.

With 22 teams competing, England first had to navigate the group stages before progressing through the knockout rounds and earning their opportunity to compete for the world title.

And after months of preparation, the hard work paid off.

World Champions

England completed an outstanding tournament by securing the World Masters Hockey World Cup title, giving Mark his first World Championship gold medal.

It is an achievement built on years of commitment to the sport alongside the considerable time and preparation required to compete at international level.

Before travelling to Rotterdam, Mark joked that his main ambition was for his body to “hold up” throughout the tournament.

It certainly did.

Everyone at Ganymede would like to congratulate Mark and the entire England squad on an incredible achievement.
