Obsolescence management is a proactive strategy that addresses the risks associated with parts, components, technologies, or skills becoming outdated or unavailable, potentially disrupting operations and increasing costs. It involves identifying potential obsolescence issues, developing strategies for mitigating them, and planning for replacements or alternative solutions.

Meetings for Rail Forum Members
As part of the MOU, members can access a number of free passes to the IIOM member meetings which take place three times a year.
In March 2026, the members meeting was held in Nottingham and attended by our Membership & Engagement Director, Cat Appleby.
This meeting highlighted some key considerations:
- The importance of consideration on obsolescence as a key factor in supply chain resilience and the need to evaluate across three key areas:
-
- Geopolitics – events further afield can impact availability
- Regulations – new and amended regulations can create unexpected obsolescence issues
- Disruptions – typically climatic
- How a company manages obsolescence is critical and pitfalls include silo’d data, disconnected internal teams and lack of supplier cooperation.
Future Meeting:
- October 12-13, Milton Keynes
