Deutsche Bahn (DB – German Rail) has sealed Germany’s first power purchase agreement (PPA) to buy electricity from an offshore wind-farm.
By 2038, DB’s entire rail-power consumption will be 100 percent green. Already, 57 percent of its energy requirement derives from renewable sources.
All DB long-distance trains are powered by 100 percent green electricity – symbolised by a green stripe and the additional green plug symbol.
CEO of DB Energie, Torsten Schein, says: “Over the next few years, we will consistently replace expiring contracts based on fossil-fuel generation with renewable energy. Before the end of September, we will start a further Europe-wide invitation to tender for the long-term purchase of green electricity.”
Deutsche Bahn is already the largest green-power consumer in Germany, and the company has set itself even higher goals for the environment and the climate with its new “Starke Schiene” (strong-rail) corporate strategy.
