Rail Forum launches Rail Safety Week 2024 children’s competitions

Rail Forum is excited to launch the 2024 Rail Safety Week children’s competitions which aim to serve as a basic platform for parents, guardians and teachers to start conversations with young people as to the importance of safety on and around the railway.

This year’s competitions include a colouring competition for ages 4-8 – with a bonus spot the difference activity – and a rail safety themed Crossword for ages 8-11. The artwork for the colouring competition has once again been specially designed by Bessie Matthews, author and illustrator of ‘Arlo’s Adventures: There and back – A pick-a-path railway safety book’.

We would like to express our thanks to our competition sponsors Modern Railways and the Department for Business and Trade. With their support, the competitions will be included as an insert in the June editions of both the Modern Railways and Hornby magazines. Through the readership of these publications we hope to inspire conversations around engaging safely with the railways with even more young people. And we also thank wider media for their support with promoting the competitions and broadcasting them nationally.

Mike Noakes, Head of Rail at Department for Business & Trade said: “A great railway is a safe railway, and being safe on and around the railway is a habit we need to develop as young as possible. As a result, DBT is delighted to support this initiative by the Rail Forum for Rail Safety Week.”

David Lane, Publisher at Modern Railways said: “The good habits we are taught as youngsters remain for life and understanding that railways can be dangerous is an essential lesson. Modern Railways magazine is delighted to support the Rail Forum’s initiative for Rail Safety Week.”

Elaine Clark, CEO at Rail Forum said: “It’s never too early to start building safety together and we hope that the children’s competitions inspire positive engagement with the railways – both in regards to safety and also future careers in our industry. A big thank you to Bessie for providing the fantastic artwork, and to our competition sponsors for their support.”

Please visit the Rail Safety Week website to download the competition artwork and view the submission and prize details as well as full terms and conditions. We encourage support from an adult with the Crossword to help with reviewing hyperlinked clues and supporting on more challenging prompts.
