The way possessions are managed is evolving.
Traditionally, railway engineering work has been carried out within a T3 possession, using possession limit boards (PLBs) and detonators for protection. This requires track workers to walk to the extremities of the possession to manually place and retrieve equipment – exposing them to unnecessary hazards and increasing the risk of encroaching on open lines.
A deviation to Network Rail’s Rule Book enables T3-A possessions to be secured using remote-control technology, improving track worker safety and reducing delays.

T3‑A introduces a clearer, safer, and more streamlined process:
- Reduces the risk of misplacing protection equipment such as PLBs and detonator
- Provides more time on tools – significantly increasing productivity
- Allows worksite protection to be applied and removed within seconds using the ZKL 3000 RC
- Minimises delays and overruns
- Reduces carbon footprint as fewer journeys to the blocking point is required.
Our new animation Change Becomes Reality shows the transition from traditional T3 to T3‑A possession, following on from Winds of Change, which highlighted the impact of T2‑A.
The animation highlights how T3‑A brings a smarter, safer and greener way of working, giving teams more time to focus on the rail infrastructure – keeping the rail network running smoothly while ensuring everyone gets home safe every day!
