The UK has committed to ‘net zero’ by 2050 and the rail industry has been challenged to decarbonise by 2040. That may sound like a long time into the future but the journey to net zero has to start now and we are already seeing carbon measurement and carbon reduction ‘requirements’ appearing in tenders. So the rail supply chain will need to respond sooner rather than later.

A good place to start is to understand ‘how much’ carbon your business is responsible for – how much is generated as a result of your operations etc. Once you know that you can start to plan how you might reduce that figure.

This event, in conjunction with the Innovate 4 Rail project, will showcase the research expertise and facilities at the University of Derby which are available to businesses in the rail sector. By attending this event, you will be able to get more information on fully funded support available to you to tackle bespoke initiatives and projects related to green energy and embodied carbon and the impact on your organisation.

To start us off we will have a short presentation from Anvesh Prasad and Bruno Muller of Porterbrook who will set the scene as a key industry client. How are they responding to the challenge and what will they be expecting of their supply chain in the future?

This will be followed by four experts from University of Derby.  

How to calculate your company’s carbon emissions

Presenter: Dr Bruno Gallotta

Dr Gallotta is a Researcher at the University of Derby ERDF DE-Carbonise project, which provides business support to SMEs to decarbonise their operations and develop sustainable supply chains.

Reducing embodied carbon by material selection and redesign.

Presenters: Dr Rizwan Choudhry and Christopher Marshment

Dr Choudhry is a Professional Engineer and a Fellow of HEA with research and teaching experience in the areas of materials engineering, solid mechanics, failure analysis, design, and testing of composite materials.

Sustainable manufacturing – Design, Modelling and Analysis

Presenter: Kapila Liyanage

Dr Kapila Liyanage is a Senior Lecturer with more than 18 years of teaching, research and knowledge transfer experience. His current research interests include sustainable operations and supply chain management, systems modelling & simulation, circular economy and Industry 4.0.
