Bombardier Transportation has been named the preferred bidder to build and operate a new monorail system in Egypt. beating off bids by other Chinese and Malaysian firms.
The contract, which will be worth almost £4 billion, will consist of a 54km line connecting the New Administrative Capital with East Cairo and a 42km line connecting 6th October City with Giza. Once operating at full capacity, the line will be able to transport around 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
The total value of one part of the contract, which will consist of engineering, procurement and construction, will be worth £2.4 billion, with half of this going to Bombardier.
There will also be a 30-year operations and maintenance deal worth £1.4 billion but it is currently unknown how much value this will be worth to Bombardier.
Once contracts have been signed, the project will secure the jobs of around 100 staff, including apprentices.

It shows that the British rail industry is world class and can compete and win in global markets. We welcome the Government’s support for our bid”.
